This course examines how gender and sexuality are constructed, reinforced, and challenged in contemporary media. Taking an intersectional approach, it explores how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, and ability, and how these relationships shape media technologies, representations, and broader structures of power.
The course examines the nature and forms of mass media, their social origins and uses, audiences, and effects. Topics may include media ownership and access, government regulation and self-regulation, the implications of new technologies, and issues of ethics and accountability.
